# What happens after my website launches?

Launch day is not the end. Here is what needs looking after, who does it, and how changes and problems get handled.

Launching is the start of the site's working life, not the end of the project. After launch, someone should check that it works as planned, keep its software up to date, keep backups, watch for problems, and make changes as your business changes. How much of that you need depends on what the site does.

## The first days

In the first days I check that everything works for real visitors, not only for me: forms arrive, payments go through, pages load on different phones. Small things always turn up when real people start using a site, and they are easiest to fix straight away.

## The ongoing jobs

A site is not a printed leaflet. These are the regular jobs:

- **Updates and security.** The software a site is built on gets updates, some of them fixes for security holes. Skipping them over a long time is how sites get hacked.
- **Backups.** If something goes wrong, you want to be able to go back to yesterday, not to nothing.
- **Watching for problems.** Is the site up? Is the contact form still arriving? It is better to hear about a problem from a check than from a customer.
- **Renewals.** Your domain name and hosting renew every year or so. Letting a domain lapse can take your site and your email down.
- **Content.** Opening hours change, people join, you add a service. Someone has to make those edits.

## Who does what

It depends on how the site is built. Some sites let you edit text and pictures yourself. Others need a developer for most changes. I will tell you which yours is before it launches, so there are no surprises, and I will show you how to do the parts you can do yourself.

## Who owns it

You should own your domain name, your hosting account and your content, all in your name. Whoever builds your site should agree to that, so you are never stuck depending on them. If you ever want someone else to take over, you can hand them the keys.

## When something breaks

Tell me what you saw, ideally with a screenshot or the time it happened. I will find the cause, fix it, and explain what went wrong in plain words. After launch I stay available for fixes and changes.

## Questions people ask

### Do I need ongoing support?

Not always. A simple site that rarely changes needs little. A site with logins, payments or orders needs more care. We will talk about what yours needs.

### Who renews the domain name?

You do, from your own account, and I can remind you. Because it is in your name, nobody else can lose it for you.

### What if I want to change something small?

Send me a message. Small changes are usually quick, and you will not need a new project for them.
